In architecture we are often only concerned with the architecture itself and not the greater urban context. In a dialogue it was Peter Eisenman who commented that a theory of the urban context is central to the architectural theory itself. It is important that architects always consider integration into the urban environment is as essential to creating a work of architecture as clients, program, and the sustainability.

Another redesign in the controversial Atlantic Yards stadium proposal. However, if anyone can realize the project it is SHoP. SHoP has a proven track record of building architecture that is both cutting edge in terms of design but, creates architecture tailored to the real estate and economic markets of the time it is built in.

many have been waiting for a post on hypersurrealism. hypersurrealism is a theoretical proposition by a philosopher who is a personal friend. i am not clear how hypersurrealism is defined but i would argue that hypersurrealism is taking surreal ideals to the point of absurdity. not to use absurd in the classical sense but instead using it to describe a condition that is so surreal that it becomes almost alien to traditional typology and ideology. a good example of the hypersurreal is the highline project by field operations. james corner of field operations takes the idea of the park and flips it on its head. he removes the green space from terra firma and places in the air elevated above the urban ground plane. however, by questioning and redefining the notion of what a public greenspace can be, corner creates a public space that is isolated yet integral to the urban environment.

hyperrealism in art and architecture

i again draw inspiration from the great chuck close. i think themes from his work have helped to inspire recent work in architecture. One can look at his work and compare it to the work of the architecture of hernan diaz-alonso. hernan also looks at things in their raw natural form like close. Both take the notion of human beauty and turn it on its head. diaz-alonso in particular uses the construction human hair and displays its grotesque beauty similar to close’s no thrills portraits. it is the conceptual and thematic similarities in architecture, not the obvious similarities that are the most interesting about the relationship between art and architecture.

the painting speaks for itself. i think the work of chuck close both old and new speaks to our existence as humans. nothing is changed, not flashy entourage, no glitzy lights, just life plain and simple

i created the blog as an outlet for theories of both life and architecture. i think interrelationship between the two is interesting. rather than setting up the blog in the fashion of a twitter i intend for the blog to be a outlet for philosophical discussion of both architecture and human existence. if we look at these things through a philosophical outlet rather than observational i believe we can gain insight into both pragmatic and fundamental elements of life.
